The Lincolnwood Police Department has noticed a striking increase in the theft of Hyundai and Kia vehicles. Although these vehicles were manufactured to meet or exceed Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, criminals managed to find a method to defeat certain models’ ignition systems and have shared this information via social media. Hyundai has provided the Village with a limited supply of steering wheel locks, free of charge, which are available to Lincolnwood residents. Vehicle locks work with all Hyundai model years, but models produced between 2015 and 2021 that have a key ignition are most commonly at risk of theft.
Lincolnwood residents can bring the registration card for their Hyundai vehicle (model years 2015 to 2021) and proof of purchase for the 2022 vehicle sticker to the Lincolnwood Police Station and receive a free steering wheel lock courtesy of Hyundai Motors America. Residents who have lost their registration card can bring the vehicle and provide the license plate number to Police Department personnel. Steering wheel locks can be obtained between the hours of 7:00 am and 5:00 pm. There is a limit of 1 lock per household. These locks are for 2015-2021 Hyundai vehicles registered in Lincolnwood and the program will continue until the Village's supply of locks is exhausted.
The Village is currently exploring a similar option for Kia vehicles and hope to have more information in the future..
